1 John HEADLEY was apparently the progenitor of all the HEADLEYs on the
Northern Neck of VA & of many other HEADLEYs throughout U.S. He is al-
most certainly the ancestor of HEADLEYs in KY, NC, & AL. There were
other HEADLEYs in the Colonies however, & even in Va before John. 1
branch settled in NJ & move west into PA & OH. Another branch had settled
in New England by the late 1700s. John HEADLEY was probably died before 1660,
perhaps in England. The 1st record of John is in a land grant to Richard
Whitehead dated 15 Mar 1672/73. John HEADLEY was 1 of 16 persons trans-
ported by Whitehead. Whitehead's land was located on the south side of
the Rappahannock River near the lower falls probably in present-day
Essex Co. By early 1679, John was in Westmoreland Co. where he was in-
volved in a lawsuit of Jeremiah TAYLOR. Next, in 1690, a John HEADLEY
was 1 of 12 persons transported to VA by Alex Newman. Newman's land
was in the same general area of Whitehead's on the south side of Rappahannock
River same general area of Whitehead's on the s side of Rappahannock River about
3 miles from the river near Occupacia Creek. This area is also Essex Co.
just across the river from Westmoreland Co. 25 Apr 1698, William Hmmock of
Yecomoco in Westmoreland Co, cooper, & Christian, his wife, deeded 161 Acres
to John HEADLEY. The court ordered that John be freed from payments
of taxes so long as his inability of sight continued.
